This book is out of print and hard to get hold of. I've seen it selling second hand for a small fortune in the past. Very useful to help build up vocabulary. https://www.scribd.com/doc/300210173/An-introduction-to-the-Sacred-Language-of-Sikhs-by-Christopher-Shackle

I've been looking at this recently. It's a very interesting extract from the Chaupa Singh Singh rehatnama as translated and published by Hew McLeod. If it is an accurate account, it suggests that Guru ji didn't expect all Sikhs to fight in war, deeming some unsuitable. I've not compared the translation to the original Panjabi text as given in McLeod's book yet. I'm posting both for people's inspection. I love reading, but unfortunately I just can't do it for prolonged periods in electronic form (ebooks, kindle, ipads etc.), and can't afford to print out the whole ebook at the moment hence I haven't read the book fully yet. Translation: Full book available here:…

I heard there is an early teeka by Jodh Singh on Japji Sahib. Anyone read it? How does it compare to Prof. Sahib Singh's? Can I get it online? Also I was wondering is anyone had a decent ecopy of Bhai Vir SIngh's Rana Surat Singh? Thanks for any help in advance. PS - Prof. Sahib Singh's autobiography would be nice too.....

When the ‘Wild’ proved more educated By Hema on February 19, 2010 When the British conquered Lahore in 1849, Lord Dalhousie, the Governor General, declared that he would educate the “wild illiterate Punjabis” in a new system of Anglo-Vernacular education. When they started the East India Company Board was shocked by what already existed. The board was amazed to find that the literacy rate in Lahore and its suburbs was over 80 per cent, and this was qualified by the description that this 80 per cent comprised of people who could write a letter. Today, in 2010, less than nine per cent can do this, while 38 per cent can sign their n…

I read this article at the website “ http://sikhchic.com/article-detail.php?id=585&cat=18 “ From this it looks that Sikhs and their leadership are so “politically correct” that they would not try to prevent it.. As you may have also read reported in some Punjabi media from Punjab that “Ashutosh” (spelling ?) has challenged the Sikhs to debate. He wven sent a CD to Akaal Takht about it From the looks of it the Akaal Takht Jathedar does not know what to do. Now we have all the major religions after converting Sikhs. In the USA, it is Muslims and Christians; in the UK again it is Muslims and Christians; In Canada it is Christians; and In Punjab it is free for …

What have you experiences been in respect to doing simran (naam japping) before or after paat? I know we aim to do it rom rom 24 hours, but until some of us amateurs get there (if we are graced to that is), what have the regularly practicing simran sangat's experiences been? Does order matter? Do we have a choice? How does it make a difference? etc. etc. Please share your thoughts and experiences.
